28 Years in Workforce Management Taught Me What Was Missing — So I Built It

ABS: Activity Based Scheduling

Beyond the Rota: Solving the Scheduling Problem No One Else Would

ABS has always been a passion of mine. Too many scheduling systems I've used over the years simply haven't coped with managing multiple elements at once — a real gap, given that workforce management is rarely as simple as one person, one shift, one place. These elements include, but are not limited to:

Just as importantly, many systems that can handle this complexity don't display it well. They fail to give an employee or a manager a clear, chronological view of the schedule — and that clarity is exactly what people need to do their jobs with confidence.

When I sat down to design ABS, I set out to deliver on a few key principles:

Total visibility. See instantly who is working where, across every site, client and location, in real time.

Instant adaptation. Reassign staff, change locations or update a shift in seconds — with employees seeing the most up-to-date information immediately.

Multiple role types, one screen. From care workers to supervisors, cleaners to deep cleaners, kitchen porters to chefs, and nurses to HCAs or receptionists — however your business operates, and whatever your terms and conditions, ABS manages it all on the same screen, at the same time.

Underpinning all of this is the one thing that matters most: making sure the right pay rate is applied, every time. That means complex scheduling is handled correctly from the outset — hours are calculated automatically, overlaps are eliminated, and everything is presented in chronological order, so there is never any ambiguity about who is working when, where, and on what rate.

While we were designing and building ABS, we also made sure that every shift carries all the information a team needs: detailed shift notes, file attachments, job and location records, a direct web link, secure messaging (with no personal details displayed), and a secure digital document storage area. All of this is fully accessible and fully compliant with the Working Time Directive and Regulations (WTD), the Employment Rights Act 2025 (ERA 25), the Fair Work Agency (FWA) framework, and any local terms and conditions your organisation applies internally.

That passion is now a reality, delivered through WfMHub. Everything described above comes as standard, so you get the most cost-effective, efficient use of the platform — and the best possible experience for your biggest asset: your workforce.
